This article taught me a lot about the history behind the development of the world wide web. I’m not as familiar with its history, but it’s been a really interesting article to read about. It was easy to say ‘www’ means world wide web, but it was new for me to understand the timeline leading up to the current position of web and the status quo.
History of the Internet:
Not only did this video explain the invention from time-sharing to filesharing, from Arpanet to Internet. Despite having having trouble with understanding the terminology and vocabulary, this documentary records a lot of information regarding the creation of the computer and the compatibility of networks merging to create the internet. I knew the internet was getting bigger, but never knew how fast it got within a 70 year period. It was also helpful in understanding the history behind the making of the internet as well as the importance of the internet in terms of research and development.
History of the Internet 2:
I remember how the internet used to be handled in rooms filled with machines, computers, and researchers, but now were ale to reduce the amount of materials we need to gain full access to the whole web. One thing I learned more from this video was how useful the computer was during the cold war and how it made a legacy in less than a century. I also learned how messages we’re ale to be sent thru computers until the ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), in 1962. The part where the narrator said, “There was a period in time where you couldn’t use the phone and internet at the same time.” I felt Wow, that statement right there just made me feel like an old timer instantly. Not only was this very knowledgable to learn about, but it helped me realize that the internet is one of the most important tools in research and knowledge, giving us access to countless amounts of information and sources from all across the globe. Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sources became a product made from the internet. This show wouldn’t exist without the internet and to show respect to this invention it gave give me a brief history of how it all came to be.
History of the Internet 3:
This video taught me how to bundle data into packets so they could send information to a different computer. Which I believe its important for graphic designers to know how the internet works and its historical importance. Believe it or not, my great uncle was a part of ARPA and helped developed the first phases of the arpanet. I didn’t know him very well, due to his passing, but my cousins would talk about how he loved bragging about being first internet gamers in history by sending jokes back and forth from one station to another station.
The Internet Then and Now:
What I learned from this assignment was Tim Berners-Lee, a contractor with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), developed a rudimentary hypertext program called ENQUIRE. From the article, it talked about how his program wasn’t ready to be introduced to the open public. For purposes of the web still acting as a series of simple text pages, difficult to navigate, and inaccessible to most people in general. It was developed in 1990 with the help of Robert Cailliau, another computer scientist and author who proposed the first hypertext system for CERN in 1987 and collaborated with Tim Berners-Lee on ‘www’ from before it got its name. In 1993, the Mosaic web browser was released, which allowed users to explore multimedia online. The introduction of the first modern search engines happened in 1993 as well. In 1994, “WebCrawler began to “crawl” the net, indexing entire pages of active websites,” which not only allowed this technology to open to door to ‘powerful search engines,” it made it possible to connect with other resources. Web 2.0 was created by then. It then later transitioned from web 2.0 to the www. The Internet has definitely made a name for itself in world history. The way you communicate and share information has changed. Its started out as a room filled with wires and machines, now we have smartphones that aren’t hard to handle.
1993:
The video from 1993, documented the impact the internet made on earth and records how the US was able to gain total access to anything on the planet. The internet is considered the greatest invention of the 20th century and one that has revolutionized the way we perform even basic everyday tasks. There are very few things the internet isn’t capable of; whether that is ordering your shopping, checking your email, learning something new, socializing with friends, or any number of other tasks.
This Internet archive isn’t just building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form, it’s a perfect example of a world wide network that stretches across various different research and information, making it a perfect search engine for academic and personal usage. Almost acting like a library that provides free access to researchers, historians, scholars, the print disabled, and the general public. Makes life a lot easier now than it was before in the 1950’s.
